TRIP DESCRIPTION

It is time to get to know the region of Upper Carniola. We will be stopping by at locations known after their natural beauty. Our first stop is the nature reserve called Zelenci Springs which is located near the town of Kranjska Gora, in the far northwestern corner of Slovenia. It is the source of Slovenia's longest river Sava, with its hidden mysterious bubbles which bring the river up to the surface.

ZELENCI SPRINGS

At Zelenci Springs, water from underground Nadiža Creek (originating in the Planica Valley) re-emerges through the porous bottom of a 2 meter deep lake, whose waters are noted for their deep, brilliant green. The spring and its surrounding area are named after this colour (Zelenci is a deadjectival plural noun from Slovene zelen which means 'green'). The lake itself never freezes, it has a constant temperature throughout the year of 6 degrees Celsius.

Zelenci Springs was declared a nature reserve in 1992, both for its geological interest and as home to numerous endangered animal and plant species. The area of the nature reserve is 14 ha or 140000 m2. The maintained trails feature informational signage, as well as viewing bridges and an observation tower.

LAKE JASNA

Lake Jasna, where its visitors are awaited by 6 meter tall piers and a high scenic platform is a small, aquamarine lake with white sand around its rim and the high mountain peaks of the Julian Alps as a dramatic backdrop. It lies at the confluence of the two branches of the Pisnica stream in the far northwestern corner of Slovenia, just south of the alpine resort Kranjska Gora. A statute of Zlatorog, the golden-horned ibex, stands proudly at the entrance and provides perfect tourist photo opportunities.

At the lake you will also be able to drink your morning coffee and enjoy the exquisite view of the Julian alps.

PLANICA & TAMAR VALLEY

Our route will continue towards Planica, where the nordic ski jumping centre is situated. The most brave out of you all will be able to ascend to the top of the ski jumping hill, which allows you to jump more than 250 meters. You will be able to experience how much courage ski jumpers really need to jump in Planica. We also recommend that you do not miss the chance to take a walk to the Tamar valley during your free time in Planica. You will be able to observe up to 2500 meters tall mountains and (mountain) ridges. The two thousand tall Mojstrovka, Travnik, Velika Dnina, Ponc and Jalovec will blow you away and the Tamar mountain hut will take care of your refreshments.

The return back to Ljubljana will follow in the late afternoon.
